One Piece Concludes a Quarter-Century Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured numerous filler arcs. Starting in January, once the current storyline concludes, the animated series will take a three-month break until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will release two seasons every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the universe — incorporating more material, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a half-year break that began in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the animation quality and let the comic to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to supply viewers with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the news, this may lead to a single installment of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with some instead handling more material or additional to make up for time.

This concludes of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of production, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course itself have so many side stories, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each year, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
